RDKB - Grand Forks Recreation

The Grand Forks Recreation Department operates the  Grand Forks and District Aquatic Centre and the Grand Forks Arena and offers a wide variety of programs, activities and special events for all ages. A program guide, which is published monthly, contains information on facility schedules, programs, special events and community activities.

Funding for recreation services comes from the residents of the City of Grand Forks and Electoral Area D as well as from facility and program user fees. There are three separate budgets for Grand Forks & District recreation facilities and programs; Grand Forks Aquatic Centre, Grand Forks Arena and program guide. The recreation department consists of 17 permanent staff and a 10-person advisory Recreation Commission comprised of volunteers representing the City of Grand Forks and Electoral Area D.

Fitness Programs

Grand Forks Rec fitness room

Aquafit programs are scheduled regularly in the Aquatic Centre and include three levels of intensity - AquaMild, AquaModerate and AquaMax - offering workouts to suit all fitness levels. Swimming skills are not required for aquafit classes and the fee for all classes is regular pool admission.

Dryland fitness programs include Circuit Weight Training classes held in the aquatic centre fitness room, as well as Yoga and Aerobics/Step classes which are held in the arena viewing room.

The aquatic centre offers a well-equipped fitness room that is open for public use during all public swim hours (with the exception of programmed circuit weight training classes). Adults can arrange a fitness room orientation with a certified instructor at no cost. Individual instruction is also available.

Aquatic Programs

What's Happening
This Week?

Spring 2012

arrowMove for Health day, is a day set aside to promote healthy communities. We have partnered with the BMX Association to help get the community active. Join the GFREC staff at the BMX track in the City Park to walk the paved Trail in the park or participate in the 5 km loop on the community Trail. The loops are wheelchair, stroller, bike and blade friendly. We are encouraging all fitness abilities to come out and be counted in our active community numbers. All participants who get out and active can enjoy a burger from the BMX concession. The events starts at 5:30pm at the BMX Track area on Wednesday, May 2nd.

arrowThere is no excuse not to be active this spring. GFREC offers programs for all ages and abilities, indoor and outdoor programs. Just “Tri” It Kids Triathlon Training. We have partnered with the Grand Forks Cycling club and The Kettle River Runners to provide top quality instruction. This program is not just for kids who want to train for a Triathlon. Any child or youth who is interested in getting active can join the group and fun. The program includes 2 pool sessions, 2 bike sessions and 1 run session with the final day taking part in the Mini Tri on June 13th. The registration fee is just $5. Program runs from May 28th to June 13th. This program has been sponsored by Sogo active, an initiative to help get kids off the couch and moving again.

arrowSign up to try our Mini “Tri”. The distances are very doable, it will give you a chance to practice the transitions, and have some active fun. There will be a slight change to the format of the event. You will run 5km, bike 13km and swim 500m. The event starts at 5pm behind the aquatic Centre.

arrowMorning and evening Preschool lessons will start Monday, Monday, May 28th. Classes will run twice weekly for three weeks. GFREC is offering a new format for the Parent and Tot swim lessons program. Classes will run Monday and Wednesdays for 6 sessions May 28 to June 13th.

arrowThe summer Red Cross swims lessons dates are in place now. We will be running 5 session starting July 9th. A new set will start weekly throughout the month of July with one session scheduled for August 13th.

arrowDon’t miss the early bird registration for the 8th annual Christina Lake Triathlon on May 31st. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, June 24th at the Provincial Park in Christina Lake B.C. Bring the kids along and they can take part in the Kidsprint event that is held prior to the adult event. It’s all about getting out and having fun and enjoying what the Boundary has to offer.

arrowEver thought about becoming a lifeguard or teaching children how to swim? Being a paid lifeguard can open up many opportunities for young people to go off to school, travel or buy that hot car they’ve always wanted. GFREC will be offering a course from June 27th to July 3rd. This is a 44 hour course that takes you through the steps to be ready to work in the field of Aquatics.

Please check out the monthly flyer for complete details on all our Spring and summer programs and activities. Stop by or call the recreation office to register all our upcoming spring and summer programs, call 250-442-2202 or email us.
