The Grand Forks Recreation Department operates the Grand Forks and District Aquatic Centre and the Grand Forks Arena and offers a wide variety of programs, activities and special events for all ages. A program guide, which is published monthly, contains information on facility schedules, programs, special events and community activities.
Funding for recreation services comes from the residents of the City of Grand Forks and Electoral Area D as well as from facility and program user fees. There are three separate budgets for Grand Forks & District recreation facilities and programs; Grand Forks Aquatic Centre , Grand Forks Arena and Program Services . The recreation department consists of 17 permanent staff and a 10-person advisory Recreation Commission comprised of volunteers representing the City of Grand Forks and Electoral Area D.

Aquafit programs are scheduled regularly in the Aquatic Centre and include three levels of intensity - AquaMild, AquaModerate and AquaMax - offering workouts to suit all fitness levels. Swimming skills are not required for aquafit classes and the fee for all classes is regular pool admission.
Dryland fitness programs include Circuit Weight Training classes held in the aquatic centre fitness room, as well as Yoga and Aerobics/Step classes which are held in the arena viewing room.
The aquatic centre offers a well-equipped fitness room that is open for public use during all public swim hours (with the exception of programmed circuit weight training classes). Adults can arrange a fitness room orientation with a certified instructor at no cost. Individual instruction is also available.

Red Cross swim lessons for children ages 6 months and over as well as Adult Learn to Swim classes are scheduled seasonally at the aquatic centre. The Grand Forks aquatic centre offers 12 aquafit classes each week along with 5 circuit weight training
programs. Classes are scheduled for all fitness levels and are
included with your regular pool admission fee. View the current
recreation flyer for a detailed schedule.
Physiotherapist Gisela Ko teaches gentle stretching exercises
on Monday afternoons at 1 p.m. and on Friday mornings at 11 in the
arena lower activity room. Classes are also offered on Wednesday
afternoons at 1 p.m. in the Christina Lake community hall. Drop in fee
is just $2 for classes.
The Kettle River Runners meet
every Thursday evening at 5 just outside the pool and new runners are
always welcome. For more information you can call Lindsay at 443-3103.
Art classes for boys
and girls ages 8 to 12 will stimulate and develop creativity in young
artists. Russian artist Lubov Yesipova will explore techniques of
sketching and water colour painting in this four week program.
Starting February 12th, classes are scheduled on Fridays
from 10 to 10:45 a.m. for ages 8 and 9 and from 11 a.m. to noon for
ages 10 to 12. Please pre-register at GFREC.
Serpent Aquatics will be at the Grand Forks aquatic centre on Sunday, February 14th to provide scuba diving programs for children ages 6 and over. The Scuba Stars
program uses the "SASY " [Supplied Air Snorkeling for Youth] system
which consists of a tank of compressed clean dry air, a breathing
regulator and floatation vest to provide first time users with a safe,
enjoyable introduction to diving. The system is designed to float the
user safely on the surface and view the underwater world while
breathing air from a tank and regulator. Swimmers learn foundation
skills for the use of scuba before moving on to full underwater scuba
adventures in the PADI Seal Team program.
A Spring Break Lifesaving Camp
is scheduled at the aquatic centre March 8th to 12th. This intensive
course offers both the Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross courses in one
week. Minimum age requirement is 15 years (younger if you have
completed the Bronze Star). Participants can also register for the
individual courses at this time. A National Lifeguard certification
course will be held at the pool this summer.
Bring your sweetie for a swim on Valentine's Day. Pool admissions on Sunday, February 14th are two for one between 2 and 8 p.m.
Success by 6 and GFREC
sponsor free programs at the pool and at the arena for families with
children ages 6 and under. Parent and tot swim and play is held at the
aquatic centre on Thursday evenings between 6 and 7 p.m. Aquatic staff
facilitate games and activities in the water.
On Monday mornings families can join skating pro Carla Bryan
at the Grand Forks arena from 10 to 11 for games and fun on the ice in
the parent and tot skate and play program. Both programs run until the
end of February.
